The Masons Arms, Branscombe, Devon
The Masons Arms has the most perfect setting, at the bottom of the main street in Branscombe on the East Devon coast, backed by rolling hills and woodland, and just a 10 minute stroll from the beach. Outside the pub is perfect picture postcard, built of local stone with thatched porches, plenty of seating and firepits to keep you warm. Inside is just how a centuries old inn ought to be - flagstone floors, low beamed ceilings and open fires.
Call in for lunch, walk off with a hike along the cliff tops on the South West Coast Path, or for dinner to round off a day by the sea. Food is good and the service is the friendly kind that makes you feel welcome the minute you walk in. Order a drink and settle down for nibbles of Padron peppers with Cornish sea salt, or Chroize bites, oven roasted and served warm. Choose from starters such as Salt & pepper squid, Chicken, apricot and tarragon tagine, or Basil & toasted pine nut gnocchi. Mains include pub classics like a 6oz West Country beef burger, West Country 8oz sirloin steak, and Fish & chips - but these are not just any old fish & chips; the fish is the latest catch, coated in a St Austell Brewery ale and seaweed batter, served with crushed minted peas, tartare sauce, lemon and triple cooked chips. Vegetarians can try Torched goat's cheese salad, Pumpkin & sage ravioli, or Banana blossom fish & chips.
If you've still got room for pudding, Black Forest trifle, Lemon curd brulee tart and Sticky toffee pudding are the kind of temptations you can expect.
Families welcome, dogs welcome.
