The Miners, Sling, Coleford, Gloucestershire
Foodies will appreciate The Miners at Sling because it has a solid reputation for being a very successful gastropub with awards scooped in the Taste of the West, and 2AA rosettes. Don't you go thinking that means it's pretentious though, because it's not and testament to that is the fact that it's frequented as much by the locals as by visitors, and that's not an easy balance to strike these days. The ambience is welcoming and relaxing, the setting, in the Forest of Dean, is wonderful.
They have a big focus on local food here, sourcing what they can from within a 10 mile radius. Menus change daily and to give you an idea there are things like Beef suet pie with triple cooked chips and veg, and a Baltic Board for 2 sharing (smoked salmon, peppered mackerel and deep fried squid, home baked bread, Netherend Farm butter, Miners tartare sauce and garnish). Sunday roasts are popular with the meat procured from local butchers; book a table and tie it in with a nice walk in the forest.
