The Pig, Brockenhurst, The New Forest, Hampshire

Here it is, the original Pig, tucked away on the edge of Brockenhurst in the New Forest, with, in true Pig style, a walled kitchen garden and an obsession with homegrown and local. Hence the menu changes a lot (at least twice a day), depending on what’s nice and fresh in the garden or what their team of foragers have found in the fields and woods close by. What they can’t get on the doorstep is sourced within 25 miles – fortunately, the sea isn’t far so that includes a bounty of fresh fish.

They have such lovely homely drawing rooms to dine in at The Pig at Brockenhurst, and such fabulously styled interiors, though if you like, you can eat out on the terrace where they cook smoky flatbreads and outdoor eats on the wood oven. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon and should it turn a little chilly, there are heaters and blankets to keep you warm.

To the menu! Let’s see: how about you start with Chicory & Pear salad or Pressed New Forest Turkey Leg with sourdough and pickles? Then move on to mains of Abbott Ann Venison Haunch or Smoked Pannage Pork Collar, and round it off with Apple & Sultana crumble or the Pig’s Treacle Tart? That’s just to give you an idea.

If there’s a bunch of you, book the Green Room - it seats 14 and has its own terrace.
