The Plough Inn, Holford, Somerset

A proper job rural inn with heaps of character in the little village of Holford in the Quantock Hills; the building dates back to the 16th century so there’s plenty of rustic charm – old beams, horse brasses, and a big open fireplace. The welcome is warm and the food is tasty home cooked fare; Virginia and Leonard Woolf stayed here for part of their honeymoon in 1912, and the pub is said to be haunted by the ghost of a Spanish merchant who was murdered there in 1555. But never mind that, there’s a lovely ambience and everyone gets a friendly greeting - locals, families, walkers, cyclists and dogs.
