The Ring of Bells, Taunton, Somerset

Not many town pubs can strike the balance of a place that’s great for drinks, a working lunch and evening dining but The Ring of Bells in the heart of Taunton has done exactly that.

Standing on the corner of the street within the town’s lively Independent Quarter, the ambience is traditional pub style, the welcome is warm, and the food is very good. The menu is one of English cuisine, made using locally sourced ingredients and cooked fresh to order. Start with Sticky plum & toasted sesame pulled duck, kohlrabi and radish slaw with brioche bruschetta, or Fowey mussels, lightly curried coconut cream, garlic naan bread and tarragon oil. Move on to mains like Venison & red wine sausages, celeriac pomme puree, braised leeks and red wine jus, Tandoori marinated salt cod & king prawn, coconut & sweet potato dahl, naan bread, and mint & cucumber yoghurt, or Wild mushroom & burnt leek linguine, shaved parmesan, tarragon oil and crispy artichoke.

There are also 28 day aged steaks and burgers to choose from, and at lunchtimes ciabattas served with fries. Eat inside, or if the sun happens to be giving it large, out in the beer garden.

Somerset County Cricket Ground is just a few minutes stroll from the Ring of Bells, so this is well worth bearing in mind for pre or post-match food.
