The Rising Sun, West Bagborough, Somerset
The Rising Sun at West Bagborough, or ‘The Riser’ as it’s known locally, re-opened under new management in late Autumn 2024, and what a warm welcome back it’s had, from people who live in the village and from visitors. It’s a proper country pub, this one, gorgeous inside and out – thick cob walls (the building dates back to 1573), a thatched roof and the original big old front door; indoors the wooden floors and hefty ceiling beams make a rustic backdrop to the heritage colours and boutique style look in the restaurant. It looks lovely and it feels lovely.
Expect a nice smiley welcome when you stride in, and attentive service. The ambience is relaxed and happy, there’s a good choice of drinks, including local guest ales, and the pub style food is excellent. On the mains you’ll find all the favourites like Fish and chips, Burgers, Butchers bangers and mash and 10oz Ribeye steak, and there are more homemade temptations like Seafood linguine, Beef Bourguignon, Creamy Irish seafood chowder and pizzas. There’s a menu for the little ones who don’t eat grown-up food, and they do a cracking Sunday roast.
Go when there’s live music and get up and dance, tinkle the ivories on the baby grand piano, enjoy yourselves – that’s what it’s all about at The Rising Sun. If the sun is shining, sit out the front and put the world to rights, walk off your bellyful in the beautiful Quantock Hills just a stone’s throw away. Well worth going to when you’re staying nearby on your large group holiday in Somerset.
