The Royal George, Appledore, Devon

The Royal George in Appledore has an envious setting, right on the sea wall, so the views over the estuary are breathtaking. Go there for top notch local food – and we mean local, with most ingredients sourced from within 50 miles. They use grass fed pork and beef that was raised in the fields of Exmoor, fish from the village harbour and Ilfracombe, and raw milk that’s delivered by the farmer and separated and pasteurised on site, with the cream used in their homemade ice cream. Even breads and pastries are made right here in the kitchen, very impressive considering the time and effort that goes into running a hotel and restaurant.

So, the menu. Well, for starters you could have Fennel cured salmon, Pan fried scallops, or Smoked venison shoulder Scotch eggs; mains might be Fillet of local pan fried sea bass, Beetroot and chickpea burger, or a 5oz Exmoor Royal burger, and the puds… oh, the puds! Carrot cheesecake, Banana & rum rice pudding, Buttermilk panna cotta… Delightful.

If it’s not raining and miserable out, sit in the light and airy conservatory, or if the sun is smiling down on Appledore, go out on the terrace. The sunsets over the estuary can be phenomenal.
