The Skewer House, Taunton, Somerset
Go to The Skewer House for a true taste of Madeira, the Portuguese island where the family who run this popular Taunton restaurant hail from. Set in a characterful listed building, the atmosphere is akin to that of a traditional Casa de Espetada, warm and vibrant with authentic Portuguese music and friendly service, furnished with old church pews and tables made from wood sourced in the Quantock Hills nearby.
Food is served in the Espetada style – long metal swords are placed in the middle of the table, hung with chargrilled meats oozing with flavour. Recipes have been passed down through the generations, reflecting the unique Portuguese heritage. Choose from lamb, beef, chicken, chourico, king prawns, mixed fish, or vegetable and Halloumi skewers, accompany with your choice of sharers and sides - olives and flatbreads, sweet potato fries, spicy rice, seasonal greens or fried maize, order a jug of Sangria to wash it all down with. Desserts come in the form of Portuguese custard tart, or homemade cheesecake of the day – and wow, what a treat!
