The Star, Alfriston, Polegate, East Sussex

In the heart of Alfriston, The Star is a luxury hotel, Inn and restaurant that’s part of the Polizzi Collection, brought to you by Olga and Alex Polizzi (Aka The Hotel Inspector, Channel 5). It’s a mix of old and new buildings that blends seamlessly, with the oldest part dating back to 1345 when it served as a religious hotel for monks and pilgrims travelling from Battle Abbey to the shrine of St Richard at Chichester Cathedral.

As you’d expect, The Star is beautiful inside and out; the 15th century frontage opens into a bar, leading onto a small library, restaurant and courtyard. Historic features like the centuries old beams, a herringbone brick floor and huge open fireplaces are complimented by antique furniture and gorgeous fabrics – it’s like something from an interiors magazine, full of fresh country feels.

It’s a lovely place to go for drinks, lunch or dinner; seasonal menus showcase the best of local produce, with mains on the dinner menu including tastebud tantalising dishes like Handmade Ravioli and Umbrian Fresh Autumn Black truffle with butter, sage & aged Parmesan, Pan roasted monkfish with new potatoes, braised spinach and cavolo nero, porcini mushrooms and Verjus beurre blanc, and Sussex wild venison loin with horseradish mashed potato, apple beignet, Amarena cherry, cassis and port jus.

Go for a heavenly afternoon tea and sit in the courtyard if the sun is shining, order a picnic hamper for your walk on The Sussex Downs or opera at Glyndebourne. Whatever you do at The Star, it will be an unforgettable dining experience.
