The Walled Gardens of Cannington, Cannington, Bridgwater, Somerset
You could say The Walled Gardens of Cannington are one of Somerset’s well kept secrets, but strictly speaking, that wouldn’t be true as word of these gorgeous gardens is spreading fast. That’s not surprising considering the almost overwhelming sense of tranquillity that prevails here; set in the grounds of a medieval Benedictine priory there’s something of a hallowed air, it feels like a sanctuary from the madness of the world and the beauty of the gardens is astonishing. It really is a lovely place to while away a few hours, one that’s full of surprises and is bound to inspire many a keen gardener.
The Walled Gardens of Cannington are owned by the local Bridgwater & Taunton College so are used by the students for study and development. It’s impossible not to be impressed with the work and the effort that’s gone into this place; wander around and see it all for yourselves - the spectacular herbaceous borders, a sub-tropical walk, arid and tropical areas, a Mediterranean climate zone, Victorian style fernery, and even a botanic glasshouse. Immerse yourself in it all, then go and treat yourselves to a slice of cake in the tea room and perhaps a little memento of your visit or a plant from the shop.
