Venus Café, East Portlemouth, Salcombe, Devon

Venus Café at East Portlemouth is so easy to find; it’s the little blue hut at the top of the steps leading up from the slipway, so you can come across on the foot ferry from Salcombe or wander up the cliff on the South West Coast Path. Seating in the garden is limited but the views are amazing, out over the Kingsbridge estuary to the rolling hills of the South Hams.

They serve food and drink to stop and savour as you watch the boats bustling about on the waters, or to takeaway and eat down on the beach at Smalls Cove. If you haven’t had your breakfast order a bacon bap, a sausage roll or a Breakfast Burrito; if it’s nearing lunchtime have a wrap, an artisan Venus pasty, made with love and local ingredients, or one of the specials, maybe Pasta Pomodoro or Chicken Cacciatore. If you’ve already eaten and are just after a snack, stop by for coffee and homemade cake, or if you need cooling down, an ice cream from Salcombe Dairy.

Venus Café is big on sustainability and they’ve even won awards for their green credentials; there’s no single use plastic and packaging and cups are home compostable so you’ll be doing your bit for the environment when you eat here. There’s also a little shop where you can buy buckets and spades and beach games, which is great if you’re heading down onto the sands and came unprepared.

Open: Easter – October    10.00am-5.00pm 7 days a week.
