White Row Farm Shop, Beckington, Frome, Somerset
As you’d expect, at White Row Farm Shop near Frome there’s a big focus on local, so most of what they sell has been sourced in the South West or produced right here on this busy family farm. They grow their own veg, salad leaves and herbs, they raise their own pigs and cattle, and the farm is home to over 800 happy free range chooks. They don’t use chemicals and what really sets them apart from other farm shops is that their home grown and hand reared produce is only sold in the shop here, or used in the onsite café. The field to fork ethos is strong, food miles are low, just how it should be.
You should take a few bags with you, because there is so much to tempt. Besides selling their own stuff here, they support around 80 artisan suppliers, so you name it, it’s here – bread, cakes, pies, pastries, jams, pickles, biscuits, crackers, fresh fruit and veg, and small batch ciders, beers and spirits. There’s an in-house butchery with top notch meat that’s full of flavour, there’s a deli with award winning sausage rolls, scotch eggs, quiches, pies and a wide selection of West Country cheeses, and there’s a fishmongers with fresh fish from the boats on the south coasts of Cornwall and Devon, seafood platters, homemade fish cakes, soups, pies and chowders and smoked fish. You may as well have a browse round the gift shop whilst you’re here and maybe treat yourself to a beautiful bouquet from the florist to make your large group holiday home look even more gorgeous.
If you have time, go find a table in the café for coffee and cake; otherwise plan your trip to allow for breakfast or lunch. It’s all good but the daily specials and the eat-in fish and chips come highly recommended.
