Woods Bar & Restaurant, Dulverton, Somerset

If you didn't know about Woods Wine Bar & Restaurant and you happened to stumble across it when you were mooching aorund Dulverton on your large group holidays near Exmoor, you'd feel very pleased with yourself. And quite rightly so, this little place is an absolute gem. Inside it’s all very cosy; you're warmly welcomed and the rustic interiors, hand-built by the owner, create such a gorgeous ambience. It makes you want to hunker down for hours here, especially in the winter when the log fire's going.

The food really is very, very good, from a menu of traditional dishes with continental influences. The owners are passionate about using local produce wherever possible, so most of the ingredients are sourced within the area and some of the meat even comes from their own farm in the Exmoor hills. Supposing... just supposing you were to start with Venison Bresaola (with Bleu d' Auvergne, pickled red cabbage, red wine poached pear and caramelised pecans) or Grilled goat's cheese (with butternut squash puree, olive tuille, beetroot and tapenade) and then say, move on to Wild sea bass (with Parmentier potatoes, pickled fennel, salsify, spinach and caraway sauce), or Confit leg and roast breast of free range duck (with fondant potato, puy lentils, parsnip puree and cavolo nero)... wouldn't that be heavenly? And then, to round off your dinner, you might choose Orange Pannacotta (with Biscotti biscuit, spiced pineapple and orange sorbet) or Iced Blackberry Parfait (with apple posset, cardamon gelato and madeleine). A nice glass of wine or two, to accompany and it's all so very perfect. You really should try it.

In the summer, there's a little courtyard to sit in at the back of the wine bar; out the front there are bench tables and windowboxes and flowerpots and hanging baskets, all frothy with lush foliage and flowers.
