Yeovil, Somerset
Close to the Dorset border, Yeovil is one of Somerset's bigger towns. In the 19th century it was an important centre for the leather industry, especially gloves, with millions of pairs made here - that’s how the town football club got its moniker of The Glovers. In more recent times Yeovil has been well known for its helicopter and aerospace manufacturing.
Is the town worth a visit when you’re on your large group holidays in the UK? Well, that’s up to you, but you’ll find pretty much everything you need here – supermarkets, a modern shopping area with a mix of big name and independent retailers, and several places where you could stop for a bite to eat. Texas Rocks is a popular American style steakhouse, and Tamburino is good for Italian fare; worth seeking out on the outskirts is The Trough, a family run café and farm shop that focuses on homemade food using produce from local artisan suppliers.
If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of town, head to Ninesprings Park for a stroll along the River Yeo, through semi ancient woodland and wildflower meadows. For family entertainment there’s a bowling alley, multiplex cinema and for train enthusiasts, Yeovil Railway Centre. Nearby there are excellent attractions like Haynes Motor Museum and Fleet Air Arm Museum, and for those who appreciate historic houses and gardens, Montacute House and Lytes Cary Manor (both National Trust).
