Bishops Lydeard Mill, Bishops Lydeard, Taunton, Somerset

If you're staying near Bishops Lydeard when you're on your large group holidays in Somerset. go to Bishops Lydeard Mill for a potter round; it's a nice way to pass a few hours and to learn about the bygone ways of life in this beautiful part of the country. The setting is charming, with a millstream and attractive gardens where bees and butterflies are busy among the flowers. It's all been painstakingly restored over the years - the mill and the millhouse, and wonder of wonders, a splendid example of an overshot working water wheel. Displays include a wheelwright’s, saddler’s and blacksmith’s workshops, along with numerous artefacts in the Mill itself and in the Rural Life Museum. See the gypsy caravan, the shepherd’s hut and the brightly painted carts, then go to the tea room for a big fat slice of home made cake.

The Mill is open from 10.30am to 4.00pm from the late May Bank Holiday weekend until the end of September but is generally closed on Mondays and Saturdays - with the exception of August when it's open every Saturday and on the Bank Holiday Monday. A bonus is that proceeds and donations go to five very worthy charities, so your visit goes someway to making a better future for some. Dogs welcome on leads.
