Bishops Lydeard, Somerset
At the foot of the Quantock Hills, just 6 miles from the Somerset county town of Taunton, Bishops Lydeard is a big village with an equally big community. If you need any bits and pieces, you can get them here as there’s a convenience store and a farm shop that’s well stocked with delights from the local area.
You can have a good day out in Bishops Lydeard if you’re staying nearby on your large group holiday. Start by visiting the working mill and rural life museum at Bishops Lydeard Mill, then wander up to the terminus at the West Somerset Railway and catch a steam train to the coast. Alight at Blue Anchor or Minehead for a few hours playing on the sand, then return to the village for tea and cake at Daisy’s Tea Room or go to the Tap Room at Quantock Brewery to sample the beer they make onsite.
If you fancied lunch or dinner out, The Bird in Hand is a good family run pub that serves homemade pub food, The Lethbridge Arms does authentic Thai and gets good reviews, and on the edge of the village, Podshavers Restaurant does an excellent Sunday roast.
