Cedric’s At The White Swan, Misterton, Crewkerne, Somerset

Cedric’s At The White Swan in Misterton is a shining example of how it pays to diversify, especially in these times when a lot of pubs are struggling to compete with supermarkets selling cheap booze. The White Swan is just across the road and like a lot of village pubs, it all got a bit too quiet so what they did was open up a farm shop in an old stone shed in the car park where they’d been selling cider since 1957.

Several awards later, Cedric’s is stocked with a cornucopia of local goodies, so take a basket and pile it high with cakes, bread, Somerset cheese, local milk, Dorset cream, marmalade, jam, chutney, local honey, tea and coffee, and fruit and veg. Try real ale and proper job Scrumpy cider straight from the barrel or pick out a few bottles. It’s worth remembering that they do fruit and veg boxes too, so you can order ahead and pick it up when you get to your Sleeps12 large group holiday house, or they’ll deliver.

What Cedric’s is well known for in these parts is their Somerset Cider and Apple Cake, made with big fat sultanas, free range eggs and cooked just as it would be in a country kitchen. You should try it.
