Grand Pier, Weston-super-Mare, Somerset

If you go to Weston-super-Mare when you’re on your large group holiday in Somerset, you just HAVE to go to the Grand Pier. This is what Weston is all about, a great British day out at the seaside with all its traditions – the sandcastles, the deckchairs, the donkey rides, the funfair – and the pier. Opened in 1904, it’s been destroyed by fire twice (in 1930 and 2008), but like a phoenix it’s risen from the ashes, coming back bigger and better than before. Walk the 366 metre length of it, be sure to stop and admire the views back inland and over the Bristol Channel, breathe in that bracing sea air.

Entry to the pier is just £1 per person, and you can buy unlimited ride wristbands, which sounds like a good idea. Think of the Grand Pier as an indoor theme park, somewhere you can go whatever the weather’s doing and not have to worry about getting cold and wet. There are rides for all ages – the Sidewinder, Dodgems, a House of Horror, mini golf, a Laser Maze, Glo-Karts (like Go-Karts but with UV lighting), and soft play for the very young.

Get your Fun Card credits and have a blast with over 500 arcade games to choose from, like Super Speed Racers, Dodgeball, Space Invaders, and Step ManiaX. There’s just so much fun to be had here! And if you feel your tummy starting to rumble, there are plenty of places where you can grab food to go, or sit at a table and have a good lunch. There are milkshakes, donuts, ice creams and waffles; go to Tiffany’s Restaurant for traditional fish and chips, or book for afternoon tea. Before you leave the pier, don’t forget to stop off at the gift shop for a souvenir of your visit.

The Grand Pier has an exciting events schedule all year round, with music, comedy, Fireworks at Sea, a fantastic Halloween night, a Winter Wonderland, and Christmas parties. Look out for those and if they coincide with your stay in Somerset, get your tickets in advance.
