Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset
Weston-super-Mare is a town on the Somerset coast with all the feels and vibrant air of a traditional day out at the seaside – the sea in this case being the Bristol Channel, which has the second highest tidal range in the world. The 2 mile long town beach is great for a day out and one of the main reasons why Weston is such a popular holiday destination. Idle away the hours making sandcastles, have a donkey ride and go for a stroll along the 366 metre Grand Pier where there are rides, arcade games and places to eat. In the summer season there’s a beach front funfair, in the winter you can go ice skating on the UK’s biggest undercover rink at Icescape Tropicana.
If you prefer a quieter scene away from the crowds, head to Uphill Slipway, just south of the main beach. With views of Brean Down, this is a great spot for dog walking, kite flying and watersports.
The town centre is pedestrianised and has plenty of shops to browse, from national retailers to smaller independents, and there’s plenty of choice when it comes to cafes, bars and restaurants. The town square and Italian Gardens have lawns to picnic on, fountains to cool off in on scorching hot days, and benches where you can sit and people watch.
Stroll around and see the street art, catch one of the many live events and festivals, or go for a bite to eat. Revo Kitchen is great for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and for the delicious goodies coming fresh out of the in-house bakery; The Old Thatched Cottage is one for pub favourites and modern world flavours, Tiffany’s Restaurant on the pier is the place to go for afternoon tea with fantastic sea views.
