Haselbury Mill, Haselbury Plucknett, Crewkerne, Somerset
These lovely old mill buildings near the Somerset village of Haselbury Plucknett date back to the days of William the Conqueror and are set in very well-tended grounds with a lake and a river. There’s plenty of evidence that Haselbury Mill was once a very productive mill but now it’s a hotel where people go to eat in the bar or the restaurants.
Windy Miller’s Village Pub has all the traditions of a country inn down to the rustic wooden panelling and the flagstone floor. Food is of course, pub classics, but they have some tempting themed nights – Monday is Curry Night, Tuesday is Steak Night and on Wednesdays it’s Mexican. They always have the usual menu as well, with mains like Pork, Leek & Apple stew, woodfired pizzas, and burgers. Worth noting is that they do takeaway pizzas so if you’ve got very young children with you that might be a good option for dinner when you’ve had a long day out. If you’re down this way celebrating a special birthday or something, they take bookings of private parties of 20+ during the week.
There’s also a very nice Lakeside Restaurant that offers an A La Carte menu for lunch or dinner of dishes like Rack of lamb, Duo of roasted salmon and seabass, Roasted duck breast and confit duck leg, and Braised West Country Beef Cheek. They also serve sandwiches and cakes until 5 pm and do a jolly nice afternoon tea. On Sundays there’s a popular carvery in the Tithe Barn from 12.00 to 6.00 pm with choice of 4 roasts, plus a fish and vegetarian option
