North Petherton, Somerset
North Petherton lies on the A38 between the Somerset Levels and the Quantock Hills, just off the M5 motorway. If you're stopping there or staying nearby have a strollĀ along the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal, with sculptures along the trail, and have refreshments in theĀ little tea shop. It's a small town with a few local shops and eateries; if you prefer a country pub go to the Bower inn at East Bower, or the King Alfred at Burrowbridge.
Interesting fact: it was near here that the famous Alfred Jewel was found; it's now in the Ashmolean Museum and is thought to be the top a 9th century pointing stick for reading - something King Alfred was eager to promote.
