Porlock Bay, Somerset
A flatter part of the Exmoor coastline between Porlock Weir and Hurlestone Point overlooking the Bristol Channel, and backed by grassy marshes. There’s a long shingle ridge and an inland salt marsh, an old lime kiln and pillboxes from WWII. On Porlock Beach, at very low tide you can just about see the remains of a submerged forest, and there are some fascinating rock pools. The marshes are rich in wildlife; twitchers like to hang out here looking for a spoonbill or an oystercatcher. Walk the dog on the beach at Porlock Weir, then retire to the cosiness of the Bottom Ship for a bite to eat.
