River Cottage, Axminster, Devon
Everyone’s heard of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage, and here it is, a 100 acre organic farm hidden away in a picturesque valley not far from Axminster.
At the top of the hill there’s a car park, and the Kitchen & Store, where you can drop by for breakfast, lunch or cakes; it’s dog friendly and if you choose a nice day you can sit out on the terrace where the views across the Devon countryside are staggering. Food, as you’d expect, is wonderful, made with a big focus on fresh and local, sustainable and seasonal; on the lunch menu are enticements like Bubble & Squeak, wilted greens, poached egg and cheese sauce, Organic mutton tagine, herby barley and preserved lemon, and Organic English lentil & cauliflower patties, citrussy hummus, dukka, chimichurri and River Cottage leaves.
Down the track is the 17th century farmhouse, the kitchen gardens and the livestock. You can see it all on open days or if you book for one of the many Feast Nights, seasonal lunches or suppers, or courses that are held here.
