St Catherine’s Chapel, Abbotsbury, Dorset
This 14th century chapel stands all alone high up on a hill with spectacular views over Chesil Beach and the gorgeous Dorset landscape. It was built as a retreat by the monks who lived in the abbey at Abbotsbury just down the road; these days it’s still used for a few services throughout the year, and locals and visitors alike enjoy the short climb up the hill to take in the sweeping panorama and to look around this ancient building. The ‘wishing holes’ arouse curiosity; they are little nooks where local women asked for a husband in their prayers to St Catherine.
