The Beambridge Inn, Sampford Arundel, Wellington, Somerset

Locals and visitors alike have a lot of praise for the Beambridge Inn; it's on the A38 about a mile or so from Wellington so it gets a lot of passing trade, and quite rightly so; it makes a good place to stop off for a bite to eat, with the backdrop of Somerset countryside. The Beambridge was a coaching inn back in the day, but that was well over 200 years ago; these days it's a traditional country pub, albeit quite a big one, and what's appreciated is the excellent hospitality and the wholesome home cooked food that comes at very good prices. Try it for yourselves, they're open all day every day with breakfasts served from 7.00 am and the bar opening at 11.00 am, so you can go there for something different to your cornflakes, or call in for lunch, afternoon tea or dinner. What you'll get is honest fare made using local ingredients as much as possible because the family who run The Beambridge have been here for years and have built up excellent working relationships with the farmers, butchers and growers in these parts.

The menu is pub classics, so expect the likes of Beef & ale pie, Slow braised lamb shank, Fish pie and a jolly good selection of steaks, burgers, curries and salads. Vegetarians are well catered for with things like sweet potato, black bean and ground rice burger, mushroom and spinach lasagne and lentil & vegetable curry. Now, the other thing they do is a carvery, which goes down very well indeed according to reviews. Local meats, veg grown in the fields nearby... that's got to be good. Book that in for after a stroll up to Wellington Monument, you'll appreciate it all the more after the fresh air and exercise.

Open: 11.00 am-11.00 pm every day, and for breakfast from 7.00 am
