The Lethbridge Arms, Bishops Lydeard, Somerset
If you were strolling around Bishops Lydeard you might wonder why there’s a yellow tuk tuk parked outside The Lethbridge Arms. Not what you’d expect to see at the front of a Somerset village pub, but with all good reason because the other thing that you wouldn’t expect is that they serve authentic Thai food here. By all accounts it’s excellent – it gets very good reviews and The Lethbridge is becoming a very popular place with locals and visitors alike. The friendly and attentive service gets a lot of mentions too, so that’s another plus.
The chef is from Thailand and uses traditional methods to create dishes like Pad Thai, Massaman curry, Pad Khing and house specialities including Chuchee and Pad Kra Pow. Her other speciality is gourmet burgers from the grill; Smokey Monterey Jack & Pickle Burger, Bacon & Cheese Burger, even a Vegan Burger, so no one’s left out – there’s a menu for little people too.
Inside there’s still the kind of character you’d expect to see in a 16th century coaching inn; exposed beams, stone walls and fireplaces. It makes a cosy backdrop to the mismatched chairs and tables, lanterns hang from the beams and it all makes a unique and relaxed ambience. If it’s cold outside the fires will be lit, if it’s warm, take a pint of the local brew and sit outside in the tuk tuk to watch the comings and goings.
