The New Inn, Cross, Axbridge, Somerset

The New Inn is traditional country pub in every sense, which is just how it ought to be. Standing on an old coach road in a quiet hamlet in Somerset, the backdrop is wooded hillsides at the edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape; in the summer the front of the pub is adorned with tubs and hanging baskets profuse with flowers and colour.

It gets busy here at times, with locals and visitors coming for the relaxing ambience, the friendly service and the food. The location makes it popular with walkers and cyclists exploring The Strawberry Line and Crook Peak. Tuck into good homecooked food with a menu of specials that change with the seasons, all made using local produce; there are starters and small plates, pub classics, and New Inn favourites like Jim Bakers Old Spot pork, honey & mustard sausages, creamy mash, buttered green beans & Tenderstem, with caramelised Guinness onion gravy. If it’s lunchtime and you don’t want a big bellyful, have a baguette and a bowl of chips, or a Ploughman’s.

To the side of the pub there’s a beer garden with a children’s play area and far reaching views over the Somerset Levels.

Dogs welcome.
