The Oyster and Fish House, Lyme Regis, Dorset
The Oyster and Fish House brings you fish and seafood from Mark Hix, showcasing the very best of local produce from the shores of the Jurassic Coast to the nearby fields, woods and hills, with several ingredients sourced from artisan producers who hone their craft in this part of the country.
The setting is awesome, on the cliff halfway down the steep hill that rolls down to the shore at Lyme Regis; inside is wonderfully light and airy with floor to ceiling windows giving incredible views of the harbour and far out to sea; outside on the wrap around terrace, well, you can imagine. If the weather’s holding up make sure you book a table out there.
What’s on the menu depends very much on what the fishermen bring in and it changes twice a day; to give you an idea, you could plum for a starter of Flodge smoked salmon ’Hix cure’ with soda bread or Lyme Bay scallops with a Trealy farm chorizo crust, followed by a main course like Hannan’s sugar pit bacon chop with cockles and sea beet or Grilled Lyme Bay lobster with wild garlic butter and chips. And for pud? How about Rhubarb and Bramley apple pie with vanilla ice cream or Buttermilk pudding with sea buckthorn? No one will be left out because there’s a menu for vegetarians and one for kids, so happy days all around. For bookings of 10 or more there are feast menus made for sharing – choose from fish, fish and shellfish, or surf and turf.
You can also book a very unique dining experience at Mark Hix’s home in Charmouth, something that will certainly appeal to foodies. Sit around the kitchen island and enjoy good food and wine whilst Mark talks to you about his work, fishing, foraging and the local producers he’s teamed up with.
The Oyster and Fish House is open 7 days a week from 12.00-10.00 pm
