The Pilchard Inn, Burgh Island, Bigbury on Sea, Kingsbridge, Devon

The Pilchard Inn is one of the oldest pubs in England – it’s been serving drinks to thirsty customers since 1336! The setting is just wonderful, on Burgh Island, just across the causeway from the beach at Bigbury on Sea; if the tide is out you can walk here, if it’s in, you can come by Sea Tractor – quite an experience and a very unique way to make the short journey.

Inside, The Pilchard Inn oozes the kind of charm and history you’d expect from a building that’s almost 700 years old; flagstone floors, thick wooden beams, low ceilings and plenty of nooks and crannies. It’s easy to imagine how it was back in the day, when it was frequented by fishermen and smugglers. If the weather’s not so great, find a cosy spot and settle down with the warmth of the fire and a pint of craft beer or local cider.

Sit at the bar and tuck into a Sausage roll with English mustard and watercress, or Tempura salt and pepper squid; on the mains are Pilchard fish pie, Lemon garlic chicken burger, Onion & barley risotto, and 10oz ribeye. Think simple, seasonal food, made using ingredients from local producers and growers, just as it should be. If the sun has got his hat on, sit outside and just enjoy being there, with the views over to Bigbury and the lush rolling countryside beyond.
