The Rising Sun, Knapp, North Curry, Taunton, Somerset

The H word is a big thing at The Rising Sun in the tiny village of Knapp near North Curry – almost everything is Homemade, right down to the sausages, pies, puddings, chutneys and sauces; it also means Home cured and Home smoked, as in the bacon, which the landlord does himself. So it also makes sense that everything on the menu is freshly cooked using local ingredients, most as local as home.

The menu changes in step with the seasons, as well as depending on what’s about, so in the summer there’ll be leafy salads and freshly caught fish, in the winter there’ll be game stews and root vegetables. Reviews are good, so give it a try, go for lunch and tuck into an omelette, chilli and rice, jacket potatoes, fish and chips or a burger. Come for dinner and take your pick from the likes of 10oz local sirloin, Crab ravioli, Grilled seabass, or Leek and pine nut risotto.

Another thing that’s good about The Rising Sun is the location – out in the winding lanes, about 6 miles from Taunton, but keep going because when you get there it’s a lovely surprise. Sit out the front in the sunshine, or if it’s a tad chilly, inside by the fire; come for Sunday roast, or for Gin & Tapas – for the latter you’ll need to give 48 hours notice. If you’ve got a birthday or anniversary to celebrate during your large group stay in Somerset and there’s not more than 14 of you, book the private dining area.

If you’re just a bit peckish and don’t fancy a bellyful, go for a bar snack – the perfect accompaniment to a pint of the local brew or a glass of wine. Scotch egg, pork and cheddar pie, mini ribs, faggot, onion gravy & bread, sausage leek and apple roll. All Homemade of course.
