The Sloop Inn, Bantham, Kingsbridge, Devon
The Sloop Inn at Bantham is right in the heart of this South Devon coastal village, just a short saunter from the beach. The building dates back to the 14th century and even though interiors are more on the modern than the traditional side, there’s still plenty of the kind of charm you’d expect – wooden floors, centuries old beams and maritime bits and pieces dotted around.
The food is pub fare, home cooked, with a big focus on what’s local, so they get their produce and ingredients as much as possible from farmers, fishermen, growers and makers in the area, which explains why the menu changes daily – it depends what’s fresh and what’s available. Go at lunchtime for a sandwich, a Ploughman’s or a basket meal, book a table in the evening for something more substantial – Pan fried fillet of bream with crushed new potatoes, tomato salsa and salad, Keralan cauliflower and red pepper curry with rice, naan bread, poppadom and dips, or take your pick from the grill; West Country beefburger, 10oz Rump steak or Hunters BBQ chicken.
It's lovely to wind up back at The Sloop Inn after a day surfing, playing on the beach or walking on the South West Coast Path. In the summer you can sit outside in the sunshine, in the winter there will be log fires waiting to warm you up.
