Bantham, Kingsbridge, Devon
If you had to think of a perfect coastal village, Bantham in South Devon would have to be high on the list. Life seems idyllic here, the backdrop is an undeniably beautiful landscape of rolling countryside, the streets are lined with old thatched cottages, there’s a well-stocked shop and in the heart of the village, The Sloop Inn, a very welcoming pub that serves good homemade food. Bigbury on Sea is close by, where the wide sweeping sandy beach has views of Burgh Island.
And that’s the big draw for most people – the beach; it’s known for its’ excellent surfing water, among the best on this stretch of the coast, so naturally, it draws the crowds in the summer months and food vans set up shop. Seasoned surfers come all year of course, and even those who’ve never done it before, because they can learn and hire boards with Bantham Surfing Academy.
Even if watersports aren’t your thing, Bantham is still a lovely place to visit for its aesthetic qualities and its peaceful air. There are good strolls to be had on the South West Cliff Path and along the Avon estuary, there’s wildlife to be spotted, spectacular sunsets, and fresh air by the bucketload. And those things, like all the genuinely good things in life, are free.
