Wellow is surrounded by Sherwood Forest, famous for its ancient woodlands and associations with Robin Hood and his band of merry men. There are plenty of adventures to be had, with cycling trails, walks, a play area and Go Ape Sherwood Pines; there are rides and games at Sherwood Forest Fun Park, and a treasure trail at Robin Hood’s Major Oak. Go alpaca trekking with JandJ Alpacas, take the little ones to say hello to the animals at White Post Farm Centre, head out for a day of discovery at Clumber Park – brilliant for activities and team building. Spend the day at Rufford Abbey Country Park where there’s adventure play, archery, adventure golf and a boating lake. When the great outdoors is calling there is so much to do near Boogie Barn.
Those with a passion for history will enjoy a visit to Southwell Minster with its beautiful Chapter House, to the National Civil War Centre at Newark, or for a taste of how things were for the less wealthy in Victorian times, The Workhouse and Infirmary near Southwell. Nearby is the Museum of Time Keeping, a must for anyone with a thing for clocks and watches.
There are art galleries to inspire, escape rooms, museums and theatres, all within an easy drive, plus an impressive choice of tea rooms, pubs and restaurants. For good pub food in an idyllic setting go to the Dovecote Inn at Laxton, for fine dining Launay’s Restaurant at Edwinstowe is highly recommended, and if you’re a fan of smoked foods and amazing desserts Smoke and Ice will be right up your street.
