Compton Bishop, Axbridge, Somerset
Close to Axbridge on the western edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape, Compton Bishop is a small and quiet village that you might visit if you have friends here, or if you’re going for a walk – there are 13 miles of footpaths in the parish, including the hike up to Crook Peak, which rises like a giant behind the church, and Wavering Down.
Not a lot goes on here, it’s the kind of place where everyone lives their lives peacefully, appreciative of the spectacular backdrop of open countryside. If you’re in need of sustenance, The White Hart and The New Inn are just over a mile away, both coaching inns dating from the times when this was a stop for changing horses on the main road that ran between Bristol and Exeter, long since bypassed when the road was straightened.
