Dowlish Wake, Somerset
This pretty little village can be found out round the lanes just a couple of miles from the market town of Ilminster, in South Somerset. An afternoon or evening stroll around Dowlish Wake is a delight; especially with the mellow sun shining on the local golden stone cottages, many of them thatched. Take in the quaint bridge over the ford in the middle of the village, and the lovely church with a monument to local explorer John Hanning Speke, who discovered the source of the River Nile. Whilst you’re here visit Perrys Cider for refreshments in the tea room, or try the New Inn.
