Dunster Castle, Dunster, Somerset

Dunster Castle (NT) stands high on a wooded hill in the true fairytale style above the picturesque village of Dunster on the edge of Exmoor National Park; with over 1,000 years of history you can imagine how much there is to discover - an impressive collection of paintings, silver, porcelain, furniture, books, and some very rare 17th century leather hangings depicting the love story of Anthony and Cleopatra. You can tour the Victorian Kitchens, the spooky crypt and the vaulted underground reservoir beneath the garden of the Castle Keep; see the secret passageway, play snooker in the BIlliard Room.

If the weather is behaving itself get a load of fresh air in the gardens and parkland; there are marked routes to follow including The Tall Trees Trail where you can see England's tallest tree. Take your pet pooch for a stroll along the leat to the 18th century Dunster Mill where they make flour; buy a bag to take home and make bread. What a nice day out!

Opening times vary throughout the year so it would be wise to check the website before you go.
