Mendip Way, Somerset
Serious walkers will love the challenge of this long distance walking trail, covering nearly 50 miles of glorious Somerset countryside from Weston Super Mare to Frome, across the wild and beautiful Mendip Hills. The trail crosses the central Mendip plateau leading down to the dramatic limestone cliffs of Cheddar Gorge and then on to Wells, with its magnificent cathedral – it’s well worth a detour to visit this attractive city, the smallest in England. You’ll notice a marked change in the landscape from this point – the windswept uplands and rugged hills are replaced by deeply rolling valleys, and you’ll have some of the best vistas out over the flats of the Somerset Levels. You won’t be short of watering holes along the way and at the end of the trail, Frome is a delight to potter about, with its quirky shops and range of eateries.
