River Tone, Somerset
This peaceful Somerset river rises in the Brendon Hills and flows along a course of 21 miles before it flows into the River Parrett at Burrowbridge. The river is dammed at Clatworthy Reservoir where you can walk the perimeter, try your hand at angling for trout, or take a boat out on the water.
If you’re visiting Taunton spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre and take a stroll along the river banks through Goodlands Gardens, French Weir and Longrun Meadows; there’s even a story trail for children; they can follow the journey of Ollie the Otter as he makes his way along the waters, spotting the sights and wildlife along the way.
The part of the Tone that flows through the Somerset Levels, near its end, is perhaps the most tranquil; stroll along the riverside path from Burrowbridge or North Curry; if you're a twitcher take your binoculars as the moors are great for birdlife, and you may be lucky enough to spot a kingfisher darting across the water. Lunch at the King Alfred or the Bird in Hand rounds it off nicely.
