Symondsbury Estate, Bridport, Dorset

If you visit the Symondsbury Estate when you’re on your large group holiday in the West Country, the chances are you’ll go home thinking ‘now wasn’t that a nice day out’, because it is. This 1500 acre estate is set in the most beautiful countryside, of the rolling hills and open fields of West Dorset, not far at all from Bridport and West Bay, and one thing that really strikes you about it is the pervading gentle ambience, the unhurried feeling; you can’t help wanting to linger.

So do, linger and browse the shops at Manor Yard at the heart of the estate, where they sell an array of fashions and things for the home and garden, have a look round the gallery, stop by for a bite to eat in the Kitchen, hire bikes and set off on the 8km cycling and walking trail to see more of this beautiful little corner of the world. Stroll through sun dappled woodlands and up to Colmers Hill for panoramic views out over the coast and into Somerset, go and say hello to the animals in their paddocks – you’ll see pigs, sheep, donkeys and goats happily grazing, and chickens contentedly pecking about.

If you’re organised, pack a hearty picnic and spread your rug on the grass, play with the dog, take photos. Soak up the loveliness – if you could bag it and sell it you’d be rich.
