Uphill Beach, Uphill, Weston-super-Mare, Somerset
At the southern end of the main beach at Weston-super-Mare, Uphill Beach is a much quieter scene where the River Axe flows into the Bristol Channel. It’s a popular place with the locals who want to get away from the crowds, so they come here to idle the time away, playing on the sand, kite flying, walking the dog, birdwatching, or enjoying watersports and the view of Brean Down.
The pay and display car park has easy access to the beach, and though there are two good dog friendly cafés, toilets and a slipway, there are no lifeguards. As with all beaches along this part of the coast, the tide goes out a long way and when it does, the lower reaches are muddy, so you need to take care. The tide races back in, which is why you should ignore any temptation to walk to Brean Down, because you could easily be cut off by the sea. Far better to take the South West Coast Path or to stroll out to the river mouth and the boat yard, or up over the hill to the windmill tower where the views are amazing. Have an amble round the nature reserve at the back of the beach, or go to The Ship Inn in the village where you can tuck into homemade food.
One other thing – Uphill Beach can be a very windy spot, wild and blustery in the winter, but it does you good and will certainly blow the cobwebs away.
Dogs are allowed on the beach all year.
