You could walk or cycle down to the village of Culmstock where you can stop for coffee at the Strand Stores, or go to the Culm Valley Inn for lunch. Take a stroll along the River Culm or climb to the top of Culm Beacon where you’ll have a panoramic vista of rolling fields and hills.
Wellington isn’t far and has supermarkets, independent shops, a cinema and a regular farmer’s market; take a big basket and fill it with local delights, let the kids have a hearty bounce at Flip Out Wellington trampoline park. If you don’t mind getting muddy you can all have fun tackling the assault course at the Bear Trail near Cullompton, or for a full-on day out, head down to Crealy Theme Park & Resort where there are over 60 rides, animals to say hello to, and heaps of entertainment. Take a trip to Exeter to discover the medieval Underground Passages and the cathedral, wander down to the quay to scale dizzy heights at Clip n Climb, hire kayaks from Saddles and Paddles and make your way along the calm waters of the Exe estuary to The Turf for a waterside lunch in the garden.
Hillydays is set in the Blackdown Hills AONB, a land of high ridges and wooded valleys dotted with quiet villages where usually, there’s a welcoming county pub. There’s a network of footpaths and trails to discover, so if you like walking, bring your boots.
You could even venture over to the Jurassic Coast for a day beside the sea. Go fossil hunting, rockpooling or out on a fishing trip at Lyme Regis, then have fish and chips on the beach, or treat yourselves to seafood at Mark Hix’s Oyster & Fish House on the hill.
