Dorking, Surrey
Dorking in Surrey is only 21 miles from London so it makes a good base for holidays spent exploring the sights of the capital, particularly if you want to be somewhere a little quieter than the city, somewhere not so much in the thick of it. It’s rather a nice place, a traditional market town with a mix of shops and a market on Fridays, and here’s a tip – if antiques and vintage is your thing head to West Street. The town is surrounded by the Surrey Hills AONB so when you’re walking round the streets you get glimpses of gorgeous countryside, and that adds to the ambience, especially if it’s a glorious day in spring or summer.
Worth a visit is the Museum and Heritage Centre and if you can, have a tour of the historic South Street Caves. Best places to eat in town? Sorrel is excellent if you prefer restaurants, for pubs try The Old House and if a cafe is more your scene, go to Mullins Coffee Shop.
