Wonham House is an imposing Victorian property that has a commanding position overlooking the beautiful undulating countryside of the Exe Valley in Devon. 9 bedrooms (7 ensuite) sleep up to 24 guests (see Floor Plans), there’s an outdoor heated pool (Easter to the end of October), a hot tub, and a games room with a pool table and table tennis. This wonderful country house is an absolute gem for big family holidays and celebrations you’ll always remember, for refined hen gatherings and impressive corporate away days. Interiors are modern country house style throughout, with gorgeous original features – rich dark wood, a very grand carved oak staircase, stained glass windows and extensively decorative plasterwork. The accommodation is arranged over 4 floors, with a movie room, private bar, kitchen, dining room, drawing room, snug and games room, as well as the 9 bedrooms. Outside are large gardens and terraces, and over 36 acres of parkland.
The peaceful town of Bampton is just 2.5 miles away, with local stores, an excellent butchers and bakers shop, and the award winning Swan Hotel. A little further is Tiverton where you can climb on board one of the few remaining horse drawn barges in the country for a relaxing cruise along the Grand Western Canal; look out for wildlife - swans and moorhens, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a kingfisher. Hire boats to take to the waters, stroll or cycle along the towpath; when you get back have a cream tea at the Canal Tea Rooms and Garden or a drink on the floating Duck’s Ditty bar.
Dulverton is another nice town for a stroll around, with tea shops and down by the river, The Bridge Inn which is good for a pub lunch. This is the gateway to Exmoor National Park, so get organised for a day spent exploring the wild heaths and beautiful scenery; look out for wild ponies grazing on the rufty-tufty moors, watch buzzards soaring overhead. Go to Tarr Steps and amble down the hill to where the unusual clapper bridge crosses the River Barle, wander along the riverbank at Watersmeet, go and see the picturesque thatched cottages that stand around the village green at Selworthy. Walk up to Dunkery Beacon for spectacular views that stretch for miles – this is the highest point on Exmoor so you can imagine… Take the little ones to Exmoor Zoo, for a bird of prey experience at Exmoor Owl and Hawk Centre, or to Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park.
If you fancy a day by the sea the Somerset coast isn’t far; spend an afternoon on the beach at Minehead, take your buckets and spades and make sandcastles, roll up your trouser legs and go for a paddle. Blue Anchor is great for families too as it has a long strip of sandy beach, and if surfing is your thing head over to catch the waves at Croyde or Woolacombe on the North Devon Coast.
You can visit historic houses and glorious gardens - Knightshayes, Dunster Castle and Hestercombe are all within easy reach. Take a family trip to Tropiquaria Zoo or Wildwood Escot to see the animals, and for a day of squeals and excitement there’s Crealy Adventure Park with 60 rides and attractions.
