Winscombe, Bristol Somerset

On the western edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape, Winscombe is a larger village with a bustling community, a Thursday market, local shops and lots of events. The Strawberry Line cycling and walking route runs through the village so it’s a good place to stop off for a stroll around and a bite to eat – go to The Pantry for homemade cakes and coffee, or to The Woodborough Inn for hearty homecooked pub food.

Winscombe is surrounded by beautiful North Somerset countryside so it’s a good starting point for walks; best is the climb up to Crook Peak behind the village. Close by is Mendip Activity Centre where you can test your mettle skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing on the dry ski slopes, or head out into the hills abseiling, climbing and caving.

The attractive medieval town of Axbridge and the beaches at Weston-super-Mare are both within a very short drive.
