This big country cottage with a hot tub near Bath was added to the Sleeps12 portfolio last spring. With snooze space for up to 15 people, oodles of gorgeous rustic character, fabulous interiors, and a hot tub on the terrace, Pink Thatch is an absolute peach of a holiday house for hen weekends, family holidays, celebrations, gatherings of friends, and self-catering corporate breaks.
Pink Thatch is just a few miles from Devizes in Wiltshire, and only a 30 minute drive or so from Bath, so it’s ideally located for exploring the city and the wonderful landscape in this part of the West Country. You can walk from Pink Thatch to Seend Locks and have lunch at The Barge Inn, and if it’s nice you should sit outside; it’s a cracking spot, right on the banks of the Kennet and Avon canal. Another way to sample the local brew is to head into Devizes for a tour of Wadworth Brewery – you might even see the barrels being delivered to pubs in the town by horse and cart.
But if you’re looking for a big country cottage with a hot tub near Bath, we’d hazard a guess that you want to go to Bath. We love Bath! The park and ride service is very handy and gives you ample time to explore the city. A must are the Roman Baths and Pump Rooms, The Royal Crescent and the Abbey, and something that’s well worth doing is the Bath Skyline Walk which takes you through the beautiful landscaped Prior Park. See Pulteney Bridge and its famous horseshoe weir – you can even book up for kayaking through the city centre on the River Avon with Wild Bath! Browse the myriad shops, pause to catch some street theatre, take your pick from the many cafes, pubs and restaurants when you’re in need of sustenance.
On the edge of Bath is Bath Racecourse where you can cheer on the nags in all your finery! Book a private box if you’re celebrating something special – the views are amazing. Honestly, there is so much to do around these parts – Stonehenge isn’t far, neither are Lacock Abbey, Avebury Stone Circle and Farleigh Hungerford Castle. There are beautiful gardens to see, and awesome family attractions within easy reach, like Longleat Wildlife Park, Bristol Zoo Gardens and Wookey Hole. As soon as you arrive at Pink Thatch you’ll understand how it got it’s name; it’s pink and it’s thatched, simple as that. Oh, but it’s wonderful! It’s that charming old country cottage you used to see on chocolate boxes and postcards back in the day, brimming with character from the outside and even more inside. Pink Thatch dates back to the 16th century and a lot of the features from that time still remain in the older part of the cottage; just look at those big thick bumpy walls, centuries old timbers, the massive flagstones in the sitting room, and the huge open fireplace with its original bread oven. Upstairs are wide oak floorboards, soaring rafters and lots of quirky little nooks and crannies, and do you know what? It all blends seamlessly with the newer part of the house, it really works and it’s Gorgeous with a big fat capital G.
The kitchen just lends itself to sociable holidays and weekends away for large groups; room to sing and dance, bifold doors that open onto the terrace, and a long chunky table just waiting for that sensational celebration feast. These will be happy days indeed! When the weather’s warm enough you can sit outside and enjoy the peace and quiet; lie back in the hot tub and soak it all up - the birds twittering away in the treetops, the stream merrily babbling along the hedgeline, and the contented lowing of the cows that graze on the hill.
The beauty of the hot tub is that it’s sat beneath a sturdy wooden gazebo, so it gives you a bit of shelter and shade, whichever you might need. A leisurely natter in the hot tub is very nice, but get this, if you’re very quiet you might spot some of the wildlife that comes and goes here; it’s not unusual to see deer and foxes in the garden, rabbits nibbling the grass, and the flash of a woodpecker darting through the trees. What a treat!
But come to Pink Thatch in the winter and it’s still just as lovely; light the fire, gather together in the sitting room, play games, watch a film, bring in a tray of hot crumpets oozing with butter, mugs of steaming hot chocolate with marshmallows and all. Pop into the games room next door for a spot of pool – what utter bliss to idle the days away together like that!
You ought to sleep well here too; beds are uber comfy and the bedrooms are so restful. Well chosen furnishings and accessories ensure a soft and peaceful ambience, and none of the rooms are short on space. In fact two of them can sleep 4 people so if your large group is made up of a few families holidaying together, that’s perfect.
And that’s the thing with Pink Thatch, it IS perfect – in every way. We think you’d be hard pushed to find a better big country cottage with a hot tub near Bath.
