A popular spot on this part of the South Coast is Lyme Regis where you’ll find plenty to see and do. The four beaches are varied and are good for bathing, rockpooling or dog walking. It’s nice to walk along the harbour wall and visit the little Marine Aquarium, board a mackerel fishing trip, or take an exhilarating Rib Ride around the bay. Back in town there are independent shops to browse, lots of good places to eat, mini golf, the galleries at Town Mill, and for budding palaeontologists, Dinosaurland Fossil Museum. Close by is Charmouth where you can join a guided fossil hunt and climb up to Golden Cap, the highest point on the South Coast of England. Further along the Devon coast, Sidmouth and Exmouth are favoured resorts for family friendly beaches and water sports.
If you prefer quieter beaches, go to Seaton where you can wander out along the mile long pebble beach to the Hideaway Café, or while away the hours on Axmouth Beach, which is dog friendly year round. If you’re up for an adventure, find your way down to Littlecombe Shoot, a peaceful bay accessed via a zig-zagging path down over the cliff.

The Sussex Coast
There are some fantastic beaches on the Sussex Heritage Coast, including the hotspots of Brighton & Hove and Eastbourne where you’ll find plenty going on. Both have all the traditions you’d expect – a long promenade, a pier, and several shops and cafes. One of the loveliest places has to be Cuckmere Haven, where the Cuckmere River winds its way down to the sea and the backdrop is the iconic Seven Sisters white chalk cliffs.
North Devon Coast
The North Devon Coast boasts some excellent surfing waters, with hotspots being Croyde, Putsborough and Woolacombe. Saunton Sands is another one, also good for those with a thing for natural history as the beach is backed by one of the best dune systems in the UK. Dotted along the coast are quieter beaches with a timeless charm and quaint harbours – lovely for an evening stroll.
Most people would agree that the best time to holiday near the beach is during the summer months, and it’s fair to say the chances of better weather are higher that time of year. But don’t forget that we get a few surprises out of season, and that the coast can be so beautiful throughout the year; It’s so much quieter then as well, and most of the dog bans on beaches are lifted from the end of September to May. One of the best things - the sunsets are glorious in all seasons.
