You’ll find the entire design of Levity has been so well thought out, not just the light and the space, but things like the small kitchens on the top floor landings (very handy – it’s a long way downstairs!), the two staircases, the huge floor to ceiling doors that open onto the patio, and the spa hall accessed without having to go outdoors – brilliantly thought out!
So, you know, we’ll understand if you don’t feel like going out anywhere when you’re staying at Levity, but if you do you’ll find plenty in the local area to interest you. You should at least stroll down to the village; it’s one of those idyllic places where the streets are lined with gorgeous old Hamstone houses and thatched cottages, and the pub, The Lord Poulett Arms is excellent. There’s also the charming Dorothy’s Tea Room, and a little shop-cum-post-office where you can buy essentials.
Have a browse around the nearby town of Crewkerne, see the 15th century church and find vintage delights at the Antiques Bazaar. If you have a thing for historic houses and beautiful gardens, well, what a choice there is in these parts – East Lambrook Manor, Forde Abbey, Barrington Court and Montacute House are all wonderful. Petrolheads will love Haynes Motor Museum, those with a passion for aviation will like Fleet Air Arm Museum. For family days out there’s Ferne Animal Sanctuary, Barleymow’s Maize Maze, and further afield but still within easy reach are Wookey Hole, Cheddar Gorge and Caves, Crealy Adventure Park and Diggerland.
Head off to explore the wilds of the rugged Quantock Hills, or the diverse beauty of Exmoor National Park. Spend a day in the city at Exeter, where you can grab a bit of retail therapy, see the cathedral, wonder at the collections in the RAM Museum, and take a tour of the underground passages beneath the streets. But one of the best things, surely, is a trip to the seaside and with the Jurassic Coast only about half an hour away you can take your pick of busier sandy beaches, quiet bays and rockpools. Lyme Regis is a must; stroll along the historic Cobb, visit the marine aquarium, play crazy golf and go on a mackerel fishing trip. Beer and Branscombe are quiet fishing villages with beach cafes and clifftop walks; go to Sidmouth or Exmouth for watersports and the more traditional seaside fun.
The other thing is, that if you’re staying at Levity there’ll be no shortage of good places to eat; the village pub, as we said, is excellent, but within a few miles are gorgeous country pubs where you’ll get a friendly welcome and delicious homemade food. The Dinnington Docks is lovely, The White Horse at Haselbury Plucknett divine, and The Prince of Wales at Ham Hill Country Park is good to tie in with a walk around the ramparts of the Iron Age fort.
